The Coos Bay Fire Department (CBFD) is accepting applications from anyone interested in a career in the fire service; no experience necessary. This unique opportunity is through an Apprentice program with funding from the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industry (BOLI). Selected Apprentices will receive on-the-job training while earning a starting salary of $4,097 per month plus a comprehensive benefit package. At the completion of the two-year program, successful Apprentices will receive a Journeyman certificate and skills that will help them find and secure a full-time position as a professional firefighter.
There are five Apprentice positions available within the CBFD. Applications are due on or before October 10. The selection process will include a general knowledge written test, a recorded home-based interview, and an in-person interview. The selected Apprentices can expect a start date on, or around January 3, 2025. Apprentices will participate in a training academy before being assigned to a shift schedule.
The intent of this Apprentice program is to augment the Fire Department’s career staffing while exposing under-represented Oregonians to a career in the fire service. This program creates an opportunity for candidates to learn a trade through means other than the traditional path. The hope is to recruit Apprentices that reflect the community by eliminating barriers and encouraging participation that fosters diversity, equity and inclusion.
In 2022, Jackson County Fire District #5, Clackamas Fire District #1, and Eugene/Springfield Fire Department hosted the first of the Oregon Fire Service Apprenticeship programs. Klamath County Fire District #1 was awarded an Apprenticeship program in 2023. Coos Bay Fire Department, Corvallis Fire Department and Umatilla Fire District #1 are the newest host agencies for the Oregon Fire Service Apprenticeship Program.
